With “Think Like A Man” achieving mainstream success this past weekend, think of a time when African-Americans could never get prominent roles in film. Furthermore, they couldn’t even sit in the same theater as whites to watch a film. While it may be absurd to think of now, with George Zimmerman uttering the word COON before killing Trayvon Martin, racism and the ignorant stereotypes are still alive and well. But while it may me whispered or subliminal now, the Jim Crow Museum of Racist Memorabilia showcases a period when it was very blatant. Located at Ferris State University in Grand Rapids, MI, the museum showcases artifacts from the 19th and early 20th century to as recent as a monkey doll dressed in the suit of Barack Obama in 2008. While many would denounce the showcasing of such, instead it should be seen as educational. We may have a long way to go, but we are much better than we were then.
